I’m Richard Dolan, a professional counsellor & therapist based in Southbourne, working across Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole, offering clear, confidential support for anxiety, trauma, and wider mental health concerns

I am a fully qualified counsellor and therapist with over 15 years experience, a registered member of the National Counselling & Psychotherapy Society, accredited by the Professional Standards Authority.
Based in Southbourne, I work with people across Bournemouth, Christchurch & Poole, as well as online and outdoors through Walk & Talk therapy.
You can find my profiles online at Psychology Today and Counselling Directory - though the real work happens in sessions, not on a listing or website.
My approach to counselling and therapy combines Humanistic Integrative therapy with Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT). In plain English, that means I draw on different theories and tools to help make sense of thoughts, feelings, and behaviours - without forcing you into a box.
There’s no one-size-fits-all approach here. I offer a consistently honest, grounded therapeutic experience from the moment you get in touch to our final session.
Everything I say or do is always framed by the question "is this in the best interests of the person I'm working with" - you and your needs are always what dictates the direction we go in.
No cardigans. No footprints in the sand. No wind chimes or crystals power animals or spirit guides - I try to do therapy without the fluff, so we can focus on what actually helps you move forward. I’m not just there to nod or repeat “and how does that make you feel?” on a loop.
I believe therapy is about learning to be comfortable with the uncomfortable. Not as a test of resilience, but as a way of developing clarity, agency, and self-trust.
My style of therapy is relational, about real life connection, and I take a down-to-earth, grounded approach to the one thing we all have in common - being human.
And being human isn't easy - we can all experience anxiety, depression, stress, trauma, relationship issues, and a whole range of other mental health challenges.
I believe counselling, therapy, and coaching can genuinely help with these issues. As your counsellor, therapist, or coach, I’m committed to helping you navigate whatever you’re dealing with in a way that works for you — not in a way that looks good on paper, or sounds trendy on social media.
My approach to therapy is about combining understanding and compassion to build resilience, self-respect, and clarity.
The aim isn’t to keep you talking forever. It’s to help you move towards the life you want and deserve — rather than staying stuck in the one that brought you here.
My goal is to make myself redundant as soon as it’s safely possible, not to keep you in therapy longer than you want or need.
I don’t do tips, tricks, or sticking-plaster solutions. This isn’t TikTok or Instagram, and I'm not selling an online course or a weekend retreat.
If you’re looking for a shortcut, a quick fix, or a few motivational soundbites, or therapy as performance theatre, I’m probably not the therapist for you.
I say this because I’ve been doing this long enough to know that some people come to therapy ready to do the work — and some don’t.
I'm here for people who are ready to change, ready to stop living life as they are, and start living it the way they want to.
If you are ready, then you can bet I'm right here with you. If you're not ready, then you'll be wasting your time - and your money.
That might sound blunt, harsh even, but it's the honest truth, and the honest truth is something you can always rely on me to use as the foundation for the work we do together.
My pricing structure is designed so that the more committed you are, the less money I make. I offer discounts on block bookings to make therapy affordable and accessible to people who are ready to stop living in fear, shame, and guilt - and start doing something different.
