Here’s a straightforward look at how counselling with Check Your Head works - from who I work with to what to expect in sessions, formats I offer, and how we get started. These answers are designed to help you decide with clarity and confidence whether this is the right next step for you.
I work with anyone willing to ask for help, but I specialise in supporting men’s mental health — including anxiety, stress, relationship issues, trauma, identity concerns, and life transitions. I see people as human beings, not labels, and tailor my approach to your individual situation. If you need a type of support I can’t provide, I’ll help connect you with someone who can.
If you call, email, or message, I guarantee a response within 24 hours with a free 15-minute consultation call. This is a relaxed conversation to understand what you’re looking for and to see if working together feels right. You can ask questions and get a sense of how I work — that’s the most important part.
If you’re comfortable moving forward, I’ll offer an initial assessment session — face-to-face or online. We’ll talk about your background, what brought you here, and how best to support you. I’ll explain my ethical obligations and answer any questions you have. If we decide to continue, we’ll agree on a schedule that suits you.
Sessions typically last 50 minutes and usually take place weekly, though we can adjust the frequency to suit your needs. We’ll review how things are going as we progress. I also offer block booking discounts and bespoke CBT packages if you prefer a more structured plan.
Block Bookings must be paid at time of booking, Single Sessions must be confirmed at least 48 hours in advance by BACS. This means you only pay for sessions you schedule — no cash at the door and no cancellation fees. If I ever have to cancel, I’ll offer an alternative session within 48 hours. You can find more information on my Pricing page.
I offer face-to-face counselling in dedicated therapy rooms across the Bournemouth, Christchurch & Poole area, with good transport links and parking. This gives you a private, calm space to focus on what matters most.
Online counselling happens via video call (usually Zoom or WhatsApp). It works the same way as face-to-face sessions and is subject to the same confidentiality and ethical standards. Before we start, we’ll make sure your environment is suitable and private so you feel safe and comfortable.
Walk & Talk sessions take place outdoors at venues like Hengistbury Head. It’s a different way of working that some people find more freeing and less formal. While privacy isn’t identical to an indoor room, your safety and comfort remain priorities. In bad weather, we’ll switch to an online session or reschedule.
Counselling often focuses on specific current issues — stress, anxiety, life transitions — and can be short-term or open-ended. Psychotherapy tends to explore deeper patterns and past influences over a longer span. Both aim to support you, but the focus and timeframe may differ.
I’m a Registered Member of the National Counselling Society, accredited by the Professional Standards Authority. I hold diplomas in Therapeutic Counselling and in CBT, and have over 15 years’ experience in health and social care, including NHS and charity work. Continuing professional development and supervision keep my practice safe, ethical, and effective. I write more about professional standards and training in my blog.
Your privacy and confidentiality are core to how we work together. Walk & Talk has natural limitations (as it’s outdoors), but indoor and online settings are fully confidential and aligned with professional standards.
